Before the arrival of Europeans in the 18th century, Nevada lands were inhabited by Native Americans as the Paiute, Shoshone, Quoeech, Washoe, and Walapai tribes for millennia. Native Americans lived in small villages and built dome-shaped houses called "wikiups". They mainly eat vegetables such as pine nuts and roots but also hunt and fish for food. Most of the tribes were peaceful before the arrival of Europeans.

In the 1770s, Franciscan missionary Francisco Garcés (born in 1738 at Morata del Conde, Aragon, Spain) was the first European to discover the land. The Spaniards named this area Nevada (meaning "snow") because of the snow that covers the mountains in winter. Nevada was annexed as part of the Spanish Empire in the northwestern territory of New Spain and became part of Mexico when the country gained its independence in 1821.

The United States acquired the territory in 1848 after victory in the Mexican-American War, and the area was eventually incorporated as part of the Utah Territory in 1850. The discovery of a large silver mine in Nevada known as the Comstock Lode(*) in 1859 resulted in a population boom that became an impetus for the creation of the Nevada Territory out of the western Utah Territory in 1861.

Today, Nevada is a state located in the western United States, the 36th state to join the United States on October 31, 1864. The capital of Nevada is Carson City and the largest city is Las Vegas. Nevada was nicknamed the Battle Born State ("State Born in War") to commemorate Nevada's admission to the Union that sided with the North during the mid-19th century American Civil War. From a state where most of the land is arid land, few people live, today Nevada has risen to become one of the wealthiest states in the United States with the main economic sectors being mining, livestock, casinos, and tourism.

(*) Note: Comstock Lode is an omen of silver ore located under the eastern slopes of Mount Davidson, a mountain peak in the Virginia Range in Virginia City, Nevada (then western Utah Territory), the major of the first discovery of silver ore in the United States and named after American miner Henry Comstock.

Overview

The geology of Nevada began to form at the western edge of North America, on the Geological Time Scale (GTS). During the Paleozoic and Mesozoic (epochs of reptiles and conifers), the continent accreted alluvium by the marine environment.

Nevada has volcanoes, many beautiful natural scenes, and wilderness. The Range region has a unique range and catchment topography, characterized by abrupt changes in "lift and fall" terrain elevation alternating between narrow faulted mountain ranges and arid valleys or basins, flat. The geography of this region is the result of tectonic expansion that began about 17 million years ago in the early Miocene(*).

(*) Note: The Miocene is the first geologic period of the Neogene and lasted from about 23.03 to 5.333 million years ago (Ma).

Stratigraphy and tectonics

The oldest rocks in present-day Nevada are located in the Eastern Humboldt Mountains(1) and are 2.5 billion years old, dating to the Archean(2) and Proterozoic(3) periods. Clark County and the densely populated areas surrounding present-day Las Vegas are located on metamorphic and igneous rocks that formed 1.7 billion years ago. This area was part of the supercontinent Rodinia(4) a billion years ago, located at the equator.

The continent split between 700 and 600 million years ago. No continental rocks have existed in western Nevada since more than 700 million years ago, as the region of western fractured and became part of present-day Siberia.

The state of Nevada has many metal and mineral deposits. Most of the mines in Nevada state are of volcanic origin. Mining and mineral resources led a role in the past and present economy of the state of Nevada. Nevada is the leading US producer of gold, silver, and barite; the second largest producer of diatomite and lithium and the only producer of mined magnesite and mercury. Nevada had more than 100 active mineral production mines as of 1989. According to the United States Bureau of Mines, Nevada ranks third nationally in the value of non-fuel production of minerals.

The Heart of Nature mine was established in 1864. It has located in Esmeralda County. Minerals extracted from the mine make medicine and gunpowder. From the early 1900s to the 1930s, Heart of Nature was an alum/sulfur deposit (USDA organic registered) that was mined underground for Alunite (K, Na)Al3(SO4)2(OH)6. 

Today, the Heart of Nature mine is mining as an open pit. A large mineral assemblage includes (Alunite, Potassium-Alum, Jarosite, Gypsum, Natural Sulfur, and K-feldspar). This set of minerals provides the requirements as a soil conditioner of Sulfur-Potash volcanic origin. The Minerals of mines apply to many fields, such as soil improvement, organic fertilizer, environmental treatment, medicine, etc.

Geology

The Heart of Nature mine derives from a pure ancient land, so the land exploited from the mine has elements of sulfur, alum, potassium, etc.
